It was fitting that for the first year Gil’s daughter Lianne was awarded the Chalice for her dedication to coaching, playing and her volunteer role at LFC despite the ordeal of losing her father.

The Gilbert Merlo Chalice

The Gilbert Merlo Chalice is awarded to honour the memory of our past President who championed ladies football at LFC and the NSFA. The Chalice is awarded annually to celebrate outstanding achievement in girls/ladies football.  This could be an individual female player or a female team. ‘Outstanding achievement’ is not necessarily about winning, but rather about commitment and passion for women’s football at Lindfield FC.

Clive Solari, who stepped in as president upon Gil’s passing recalls, “The idea of the Chalice first came to me when I was in the church for Gil’s funeral.  Much of Gil’s eulogy was about his amazing achievements for LFC and I remember thinking that the club must celebrate this great guy.  So I set myself the challenge of designing the Chalice. A rewarding yet emotional process.”

Each year we email all our members and ask them for nominations for a player or team.

Past recipients are:

 Club Honours 2020

Every season starts with a clean slate waiting for the stories to be written! 2020 you were a surprise! You changed many things in our everyday lives and it was a difficult year for many, with football being the highlight of the week. But our results speak for themselves, it takes a bit more than a pandemic to keep us off the football field. Thank you to all our members who continued to play and… play to their best!

Match Report: Women’s PL Lindfield A v Northbridge A

A bumper (socially distanced) crowd gathered at the Theatre of Beans for the biggest game of the season. After an end to end start, Northbridge drew first blood 8 minutes in following a run-away down the left wing and a well controlled finish from the cross. 0-1 Northbridge. However, our girls worked through their game day nerves and went to halftime with all the momentum.

10 minutes into the second half, a ball in from Jemima Davison on the right wasn’t dealt with by the Northbridge keeper, and Sam Greentree was there to fire it home. It was 1-1 and the Lindfield girls were hitting their stride. At 70 minutes, Northbridge conceded a free kick in dangerous territory, about 30 yards out. Lindfield’s resident free kick taker, Jemima Davison, stepped up and delivered a top left hand corner bomb. 2-1 to Lindfield - cue pandemonium at Charles Bean! Lindfield then had to weather some waves of attack from Northbridge who played some good combinations through the midfield, but the girls were able to see out the game with a valiant defensive effort. Hannah Turl sealed the biggest three points of the season and the Silverware for the team, after receiving a ball threaded through Northbridge’s defence and hammering home a goal with her trusty left boot. 3-1 to Lindfield! Congratulations ladies - well deserved! This team went on to represent NSFA defeating MWFA in the Champions Cup!!!

Invincible Reserve Grade

The Men's Premier League Reserve Grade side secured the invincible tag in the final round of the 2020 Men's Premier League Season against Knox United yesterday afternoon. The 3-0 win was their 15th win of the season, confirming that the loss column remained at 0 for 2020. Young speedsters, Max (2) and Jimmy scored the goals yesterday, capping off a perfect season for the side.

The squad boasted the perfect blend of youth and experience, meaning that week after week the team found new ways to win. Highlights during the season were going up 3-0 in the first 5 minutes away at Berowra, come from behind victories at Northbridge and Chatswood, and of course the 6-0 footballing lesson they gave to second placed Willoughby Dalleys. This all came after losing a pair of Goalkeepers in the first two weeks. Outfield player Cal Robertson stepped up, put the gloves on and had a fantastic season between the sticks for the team.

Well done gents, superb season. A special thank you must also go to the youth players who stepped in during the final 6 weeks of the season. The LFC production line continues to produce and we’re sure we will see more of them in the senior set up in years to come!

Season Stats:

Played: 18
Won: 15
